Fishing Report

Lake Fork:  No Report due to time on hot water lakes.  But, if I had to go right now I would take plenty of dynamite and some hand grenades as I am guessing the bite would be tough due to the cold fronts this week!

Hot Water Lakes: This past week the fishing on Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh has been outstanding, as expected this time of year.   Cold fronts help the fish bite better.  The more it snows, the better the bite.

Lake Monticello spawn is right around the corner.  I have seen 7 or 8 beds in the last week.  But none of the big females we are catching have shown any sign of spawning yet.  I have been targeting these pre spawn fish with a Sebile Flatt Shad and a Wave Fishing Swim Bug.  The lipless Flatt Shad can be fished with a cast a retrieve.  Varying this retrieve from slow to fast with a sudden stop can produce some ferocious bites.  The Swim Bug is best using it Texas Rigged on a ¼ ounce bullet weight and a 4/0 wide gap hook.  I like to fish the light weight on Monticello due to the high levels of silt on the bottom.  Colors of the Flatt Shad have not made a difference as this has been strictly a reaction bite.  The best colors on the Swim Bug have been Watermelon Red and Sweet Potato Pie.  For shear numbers a drop shot and shakey head will put them in the boat.  My favorite bait for this has been the Tiki Trick Worm in Watermelon Candy.

Lake Welsh spawn is coming to a close.  Yesterday all but one of the big females we caught was showing every sign of post spawn.  Fry can seen in the shallows around lay downs and hydrilla.    The biggest producer on Welsh has been imitating a bream with a ¼ ounce Revenge jig in Chartreuse Chameleon.  (Those fish on Welsh love a jig)  Early and late in the day try a Sebile Splasher around flooded vegetation and lay downs coming off the shore.  This will for sure get you bit!

There have been a few disastrous accidents on Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh in the last two weeks.  Anglers are navigating these lakes without due regard.  I am seeing boaters driving at high rates of speed in timbered areas.  One bad accident tore a boat in half on Lake Monticello this past week.  Another bad accident resulted in a boat running on plane to hit a stump.  This boat stopped and the three anglers did not.  The three of them were stranded in the middle of the lake, swimming, with air temperatures in the 30’s.  No major injuries were reported.  Please go slow if unsure of the boat lane and please wear your Life Preservers.

The 2009 season is setting up to be a great year for bass fishing.  Lower gas prices and full lakes will sure make it easier for anglers to spend time on the water.  I look forward to all of my readers having the opportunity to fish with me this upcoming season.

Water Clarity:  Clear to stained

Water temp: The water temps have varied around 70 degrees.

Weather:  Clear to partly cloudy this week, with highs in the upper 70’s.

News: Lake Fork is cooling down and the hot water lakes are heating up!  If you are looking to learn any new techniques or just go out and have a great time, give me a call.  The hot water lakes here in East Texas are giving up great numbers of fish, not that the air temp has started cooling down.  This past week, 40 – 70 bass per day were common with one 11.00 lb trophy caught.

Fishing Report

Lake Fork:  Lake Fork fishing has been on one day and off the next.  This is the reason I start booking trips in October on the local hot water lakes.  These trips last until the middle of February.  The days that the fish are biting on Lake Fork are great.  Most of the fish that we have been catching are in the back of the creeks gorging on threadfin and gizzard shad.  Two things you must have this time of year is grass and shad.  If you find a mixture of these two, you will be in business.  Throw a Sebile Flatt Shad or any lipless bait (shad colored) with a high speed reel and burn this bait over the grass and along the breaklines.  I like to use 65 lb. Power Pro braid on a Custom Angle Moby Bass Rod in a 7ft. Heavy action, the parabolic bend in this rod is very helpful here.  This bigger line makes fishing the grass easy.  It will cast a country mile as well.

There is the occasional deep water bite to be had too.  Here I use one of my custom painted spoons, a Revenge jig or a swim bait.  The two things to look for here is shad and a major depth change.  Good electronics are a must for this presentation to work.  This is your eyes under the water to help eliminate useless water.

Hot Water Lakes:  Just go fishing.  This time of year the big fish are feeding up for the spawn.  Here in just a couple of weeks these fish are going to start their pre-spawn pattern.  I like to fish a number of baits on these lakes right now.  If I named them all it would take a whole page.  But a Revenge jig, Arkie shakey head, Sebile Crankster, Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper will be on the menu.  Later in the month I will go from using shad imitators to more red or chartreuse colors (crayfish).  The main thing to look for on these lakes is cover.  Brush Piles, rocks, stumps etc. are key.

I would like to invite you out on a Professional Guided Fishing Trip. All you really need to go fishing with me is a fishing license. I provide rods, reels, tackle etc. at no extra charge. Digital Photos of your fish will be taken and will be emailed to you.

Fishing Report
  Lake Fork :
Day Report:  I like to start a trip an hour or so before daylight. The big fish really go into a feeding frenzy during that first and last hour of darkness this time of year. I have found a worm that these big fish love. The new Gene Larew El Salto Special is a 12 inch worm and it’s catching fish for us from 1lb. – 10 lbs. Throw this worm until first light on the edge of grass. It is a good idea to keep a Sebile Magic Swimmer or a Sebile Splasher on the deck for the occasional schooling fish. I would keep this rod out all day, just in case they come up close.   Then switch to a Revenge Jig in Green Pumpkin Chameleon and start moving out deeper and deeper. This new Revenge Jig and a Sweet Beaver makes for a deadly combination. I have ever used a jig that looks this realistic in the water. Here lately I have just been Trophy hunting and it has worked out on many days. Most of my day fish are in 20 – 50 ft. of water. During the middle of the day, I will head out to the deep water and catch dropshot fish on mainlake structure. This past Friday, Dana Deason, fished with me and he had a great afternoon with a stringer at over 40 pounds. Dana had this stringer in less than 30 minutes on a deep diving crankbait. 30 – 40 fish days can be common if you downsize to a dropshot, but I have avoided this pattern as many of these places are stacked up with 1 – 4 lb fish, no big ones. Trophy hunting with big baits can cut your numbers drastically, but it can pay off big time. Depending on how the fish are set up on the off shore structure, I usually have each client throw something different and let the fish talk to me. If you mark fish on the bottom, fish on the bottom. If you mark the fish suspended, fish suspended. Deep water is pretty simple, you just have to use the process of elimination and keep an open mind.

Folks the night fishing is great this time of year.  I have much confidence in catching fish over 10 pounds during the summer at night. I use only a handful of baits. I’ll Texas rig a Reaction Innovations big unit or swim a Revenge jig.
Tips:
Drink plenty of water. Wear your Costa Del Mar sunglasses and use a spotlight at night, not just your GPS.

Fishing Report
 Lake Fork:
Day Report: If you are going to catch fish on Lake Fork during the month of July, you’ve got three choices. These three choices are to fish early, late or at night. Not to say these big fish do not eat during the middle of the day, but its nothing like during low light periods. Due to the heat I will run split day trips to avoid the heat and full night trips during July and August because I want my clients to be successful.
Great times to be on the water are 5:30 am to 10:00 am and 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm. During this time target main lake grass edges. I have found that this year the bass are holding on hydrilla more so than milfoil. If the grass bed has both, that’s a plus. I like to target the edges with a Carolina Rig or power drop rig. On these rigs I am using a Sweet Beaver or Flirt. You will have to play around with colors, it varies day to day. This is a good way to catch 8 pound and bigger fish.
Now, if just catching a boat load of 1 – 5 lb fish is what you want to do here is what’s working now. Rig up a drop shot rig with 20 lb. Power Pro or 14 lb Seagaur Fluorocarbon and fish the edge of hydrilla / milfoil mats. I like to use a Reaction Innovations Flirt 6.95. This works best early and late in the day and can also be used in deeper water.
If you want to brave the 100 degree heat, fish a 1 ounce Revenge jig with a sweet beaver or double wide beaver trailer in 20 – 35 ft. of water around big trees. (target the shady side) Hold tight so they don’t jerk the rod out of your hand!

Folks the night fishing is great this time of year.  I have more confidence in catching fish over 10 pounds at night than during the day. In the last month, my clients have caught some really big fish. I use only a handful of baits. I’ll Texas rig a Reaction Innovations big unit or swim a Revenge jig. Last year during the July and August full moon, the boat ramps were so full many anglers were having to park down the highways. So if you plan on coming during these special times, come early and stay late!

Tips:
While running at night wear a pair of Costa Del Mar sunglasses with Sunrise CR39 lenses. Bugs, rain etc. can damage your eyes at night. These lenses will not only protect you, but they brighten solid objects as you are running down the lake.

Good Luck fishing and feel free to call me anytime with any questions.

Fishing Report
 Lake Fork:
Day Report: Deep water and grass. Those are the two keys to catching the fish of your dreams. The fishing here at Lake Fork has never been better. In the last two weeks my clients have caught so many Bass over seven pounds, it’s truly amazing. I literally have so many photos of 7, 8 and 9 pound fish that I cannot even keep them organized. We have caught these fish on numerous baits but nothing has worked better than a Revenge Jig and a Reaction Innovations Big Unit. When I fish these two baits I like to start on the drop off adjacent to a hump, ledge, point etc. Sometimes the fish are on top of the drop and sometimes they are positioned on the bottom of it. I like to find an area that drops a minimum of 12 – 20 ft but 12 – 30ft. is not uncommon. Yesterday my clients caught almost 40 lbs of fish on one drop using a 1 ounce Revenge jig, in less than 30 minutes. While using this heavy jig we use a Custom Angle Moby Bass rod 7 Heavy, made right here at Lake Fork. I spool up with two different lines that both work equally well, either Power Pro braid in 65 lb test or Seagaur fluorocarbon in 25 lb test. When the 7 – 11 lb fish hit, you want the extra insurance of these fine lines to get your lunker to the boat.

Most of us have heard the term Run and Gun. This is when an angler pulls up on a spot and fishes it for a short time looking for a quick bite or two if no success quickly leaving to the next spot in search for the same result. This is how I approach deep water fishing. I look at it like this, they are either biting here or they aren’t. If an angler pulls up on a spot and the big fish are there and biting, you will know it in a short amount of time. There is no reason to hole sit this time of year.
I get asked quite often, “What bait do you use to search for big fish this time of year?” The answer is simple, a deep diving crankbait like a Sebile Koolie Minnow. This bait is great on open water points like SRA. If I am searching for a school of these big fish while in the timber (Main lake points at the mouth of Mustang Creek / Mouth of Dale Creek) I will use a Texas rigged Big Unit and fish it on a heavy weight so I can move it quickly.
Now, if just catching a boat load of 1 – 5 lb fish is what you want to do here is what’s working now. Rig up a drop shot rig with 20 lb. Power Pro and fish the edge of hydrilla / milfoil mats. I like to use a Reaction Innovations Flirt 6.95. This works best early and late in the day and can also be used in deeper water.

Folks the night fishing is great this time of year.  I usually don’t promise anything on any of my trips, but night fishing here on Lake Fork is usually a sure bet. Remember that I have over 20 + years of night fishing experience and safety is my number one concern. The air temps usually fall into the mid 70’s so this makes summer time night fishing very enjoyable.

Tips:
This time of year we must protect ourselves from the sun. Wearing hats and sunblock are a must. Another must is to take care of our eyes. Many anglers are making the mistake of thinking that the only time they need quality polarized glasses is during the spring while sight fishing. This is a huge mistake and the sun will permanently damage our eyes. I use Costa Del Mar sunglasses year around and have more many years. Costa Del Mar sunglasses are made for fishing and have protected me perfectly.
Hydration this time of year is also important; remember to bring plenty of ice and water on the boat so dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke doesn’t ruin your day.
Good Luck fishing and feel free to call me anytime with any questions.

Fishing Report
Lake Fork:
The fishing here at Lake Fork is great. Last Sunday during the Legend Tournament Ron Peterson of Gotcha Distributing, one of my sponsors and friend caught a 10.23 lb lunker winning him a new Legend boat. Ron caught his winning fish on a Revenge Jig and a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver. He was fishing one of my favorite holes where we have had many fish over 10 lbs. Congratulations Ron. After the tournament was over Sunday, I had the opportunity to take a lady angler fishing. Kelly caught a huge fish from the same area weighing 10.40 lbs. Kelly caught her fish on a Reaction Innovations Big Unit. This is also the same area that Hailey caught her 11.28 lb fish with me only a few weeks ago. It is neat how some areas just hold big fish.
Once the water warms up to 75 + degrees you will very seldom find me fishing less that 15 ft of water. By this time the fish that I am targeting have already passed the post spawn phase and now are beginning their early summer pattern. Here I am looking for points, ledges, humps etc. One key thing to target once these structures are found is brush. Luckily I took the time over the years to set out brush piles in key places. These brush piles provide a habitat for fish of all sizes and species. In these brush piles I use an assortment of baits depending on how the bass are set up on them at any given time. I like to fish the tops of the trees and brush first with a Sebile Koolie Minnow (deep diver). Then I will go with a Texas rigged Reaction Innovations Big Unit on a ¼ ounce weight unpegged. This light rig will actually stay on top of the brush and usually will not fall into it. Lastly I will use two baits to penetrate the brush and catch the fish that are buried in it. A Texas rig with a 3/8 to ½ ounce weight and a ¾ to 1 ounce jig will do the trick here. When fishing deep and around brush / trees I like to use 65 – 80 lb braid. Here we are NOT looking for small fish, this is where the lunkers live. With a braided line like Power Pro, when you set the hook and start to crank, they WILL come to the boat. This line is strong.
If for some reason power fishing fails to produce for you. Try a dropshot rig or a Carolina rig and use your electronics to find schools of fish on open water drops.
Folks the night fishing is about to be phenomenal. I have shown folks for years that by this time of year many of the fish we catch during the day have holes in their mouths as a testimony of catch and release. But the fish we catch at night very seldom, if ever have holes in their mouths solid proof that some fish are nocturnal and only feed at night. I try to compare trophy size Bass to a trophy size whitetail deer; they only come out to feed at night!
Good Luck fishing and feel free to call me anytime with any questions.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip. All you really need to go fishing with me is a fishing license. I provide rods, reels, tackle etc. at no extra charge. Digital Photos of your fish will be taken and will be emailed to you at no charge.

Fishing Report

 Lake Fork:

Well folks it’s been a long drawn out spring here at Lake Fork.  Hot one day and in the 40’s the next.  I first noticed bed fish the last week of February on the north end of the lake.  Now it’s May 13 and we are still catching good numbers sight fishing on the south end.  This past weekend we had a 9.7 and an 8.4 along with a few more 4’s and 5’s, all off beds.  But, I look forward to that winding down to an end this week.

With the upcoming Legend tournament this weekend, here are few tips that should get you bit.  Going into a tournament on Lake Fork, anglers have two choices to make.  Do I fish for one big fish to win or lots of small under the slot fish to win hourly money?  Well, the Legend tournament is an easy decision.  They are giving away a really nice Legend boat for the biggest under the slot fish!  By fishing with finesse type baits you increase your chance of catching 15-16 inch fish but still stand a chance of hanging into a big stick bender.  This weekend I would approach the lake by fishing a post spawn pattern.  Take a look at the map and find ditches, creeks, points and road beds close to spawning coves and flats.  Here I would target 10-20 foot of water with three baits.  A dropshot, shakey head and a Carolina rig.  On these rigs I would throw a reaction innovations Flirt or a Smallie Beaver.  Start out with natural colors like green pumpkin, xmass pumpkin, California 420, watermelon red or watermelon.  Lately we have been catching more fish by dipping the tail slightly in chartreuse dye.

Another thing I have noticed is that the hydrilla and milfoil is growing more this year than the past 3-4 years.  It is actually choking the fish out in many places that I like to fish.  We have been finding larger schools of shad and bass in areas that are lacking these grasses.

Once you have caught some unders or if you just want to go for the big one, here are a few tips for that.  Take a Sebile Koolie minnow and dig the bottom on main lake deep structure.  The colors amber fashion and white lady should work the best.  Use your electronics to find the schools of feeding fish, cast past them and crank it through.  I like to use 20 lb power pro braid or 15 lb. Seagaur fluorocarbon line for this application.  If you know they are there but fail to hook up, try the dropshot prior to leaving the area.

Some areas you might want to graph are SRA, sandbar off the dam, Chaney point road bed and Dale hump.  These places are a great post spawn hang out for large schools of fish.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip. All you really need to go fishing with me is a fishing license. I provide rods, reels, tackle etc. at no extra charge. Digital Photos of your fish will be taken at no charge.

Fishing Report

 Lake Fork:
Goodness, where do I start? It’s Easter Sunday at 5:00 in the morning and I am just now getting the time to do my report. Got to be at church in a few hours and then back on a trip at lunch. This is turning out to be the best year for Lake Fork in over 10 years. There has not been a day in March that we have not ended up wacking some big fish. Seems like everyone who approaches me at the marinas and boat ramps are having some good success as well. It has not mattered if we fish the upper or lower end of the lake, good numbers of big fish can be found.
This report is going to be on the last 3 days only due to the rain. The water temperature is rising quickly and the lake is clearing up from our recent rains. There are two different fish to target this next week, pre-spawners and spawners. For the pre-spawn fish I am having the best luck on a Reaction Innovations sweet beaver, texas rigged. Use this bait in 5-12 foot of water and fish outside grass lines and timber. This has produced the best numbers. Color selection on the beaver has not been that important. We have used green pumpkin/red flake, watermelon/red and big Texan. For the shallow water fish I am using 3 baits. Early in the morning the Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper will pick up cruising fish up close to the bank or over the shallow grass beds. Once the water warms to 62 degrees, its time to go sight fishing. My two favorite baits this month for bed fishing, have been a 4.0 Boom Boom tube in California 420 and a lizard. Color is very important here because some fish on beds will eat one color over another. I keep 4-5 different color Tubes and Lizards handy.
Lots of fish being caught in White Oak, Wolf, Penson, Bell and Rogers creek right now. So hopefully that will give you a starting point.
Also, don’t be afraid to blind fish beds in the muddy water. By going into Glade or Birch and fan casting where you know they should be, could get your line stretched!
I will have some great pictures on my website later tonight. I went fishing alone on Thursday afternoon just doing some scouting, I caught my biggest fish of the 2008 season a 9.2lb bed fish. Jersey Dan from the Texas Fishing Forum was nice enough to come over and get some great photos for me. Congrats to my the following clients – Will Simcox / 9.0lb, Rodney Harrison / 7 +, John from Texas Air Hydraulics and his friend Justin / 7.8 lb. These fish were all caught in the last three days and were entered in the Lake Fork Big Bass Survey.

Fishing Report

  Lake Fork:

Fishing on Lake Fork has been up and down lately due to the recent cold snaps.  The water temperature has tried to reach 55 degrees, but gets knocked back down due to some chilly nights.  But, this week is supposed to be warm so get the boat cleaned up and come on down for some good fishing.  We have been catching 15-30 fish a day, depending on water temp.  Last Thursday my clients had their heart broke by three double digit fish.  One broke off a jig due to setting the hook too hard, one straightened the hooks out on a Rogue and the other shook off a jig.  There is nothing easy about catching a trophy fish out here, even after you get a big one to bite things can go drastically wrong.  Make sure you are using quality hooks, line, rod and reel.  This will work to your advantage, I promise.   We have noticed waves of fish holding on the first breakline and half way back in the creeks.  These fish are just sitting back, feeding and waiting on the next couple of warm days.  Remember the creeks up North will hold pre-spawn fish first as they warm up the quickest.

The lure selection is really simple.  If a giant bass is all you want, tie on a ¼ ounce Revenge jig in black/blue/purple or watermelon red and fish the outside grass line or on the creek edges.  If numbers are what you are looking for, tie on a Flirt in Juicy and fish the very back of the creeks, lots of males here.  People are asking me what they should throw right now on Lake Fork.  I just tell them to fish however they are confident.  Just about anything stands a chance to catch a huge fish on Lake Fork right now.  Crankbaits, rogues, spinnerbaits, lipless baits, senkos, flukes and lizards all will do the trick right now.  Just cover water until you get bit, when you do catch one set up camp and fish that area hard.  If you catch a fish this time of year, there will be more in the general area.

I have mainly fish the creeks on the East side of Lake Fork.  But, some of my clients have been fishing Little Caney with some great success.  Hideaway Harbor Marina, in the back of Little Caney is a
