Summer is here and she is in full force. Lately the highs have been in the upper 90’s to over 100. The lack of rain and good hydrilla growth has really made Lake Fork clear in most areas. One word at Lake Fork can sum up July and August fishing, HOT. To beat this heat I guide primarily at night. It is more fun for my clients, easier on our health and offers some of the best bass fishing of the year. Most anglers come to Lake Fork in search for bass over ten pounds. Therefore, my style of fishing and my reports will hopefully help you build a pattern to do just that.

Clay with an 8 pounder

In July and August the pattern I fish is exactly the same. For the daytime bite I fish deep. We will pick up a Custom Angle Carolina Special rod rigged with a Carolina rig and go to work on deep water structure and cover. My bait selection will be broad, this time of year I have more soft plastics in my boat than any other time as the pattern changes from day to day. Many daytime anglers downsize to a drop shot and shakey head for summer bassin’ these two months, but I only pick them up when the bite is really tough. Many anglers will find the daytime bite lacking in July and August, not to say there are not some great days to be had. I look forward to hearing about slow day trips in the summer because this alerts me to one thing, the night bite is on! Bass are living creatures that must eat to survive. If they are not eating during the day, then they must be eating at night. This theory of mine has held true for me for many years all over the country. Night fishing is my favorite thing to do in this sport. I’ve logged over 3,000 hours night fishing on Lake Fork since 2005. Many hours growing up on the lake are unaccounted for. My father raised me up fishing at night. Today this is still our most favorite thing to do together. Night fishing is only as hard as the angler makes it. More often than not night fishing is easier than day fishing because you can leave many baits at home. My favorite way to fish at night is to pick up a Custom Angle 7’ heavy and rig up a Texas rig. This one set up will just about do it all at night. As many of you know I have been an advocate of using braid due to its power and reliability. But, recently I have noticed that it does not get the bites of fluorocarbon and monofilament. Therefore I will be fading away from it and using more 20 – 25 lb test mono and flouro. So back to the Texas rig, this set up is way more complex than most believe. I have seen little things such as the size of the hook and weight play a big role in the amount of bites and hook ups anglers get. I’m not going to explain the science behind this, but feel free to email me or call me and I’ll explain. It has all to do with how the bass are eating the bait, nipping or choking it.

Mary with a healthy young fish

The Texas rig at night is the most productive set up. You will have to try different retrieves to find what works best on your trip. My favorite way is to throw it out and work it like a shakey head. I’ll do way more shaking than hopping or dragging. I tell my clients to move the bait like crazy, but do not move the weight. Once you learn how to do that at night, your bites will increase ten fold. The idea is to get their attention, but not take it away from them in a hurry. Let them locate and attack.

Another big one

There are several different rigs that work at night to include a Santone Jig. But a Gene Larew El Salto special and a Grande Bass Diamond Back Rattlesnake will be all you really need on the soft plastic side of your arsenal.

If you have any questions about night fishing, please feel free to give me a call or email. There are certain things you must do and certain items you must take for a night trip that are not that important for a day trip. I’ve got some of this information on my website.

Night fishing on Lake Fork is very popular. I have a theory that many large Lake Fork fish only feed at night, nocturnal.

If you fish Lake Fork on a regular basis, or if you are just visiting, having a chip from www.boatlanes.com is a must. Just insert into your GPS unit, download and voila, all of the boat lanes right there as waypoints. No more tearing your boat up, not being sure if you should be running there or not.

Billy Sartin at Sartin Marine located in Yantis, Texas (only a few minutes from Lake Fork) is available for all of your boating needs and mechanical repairs. Tell them Clint sent ya!

Please remember that the sun will still cause damage to your eyes while fishing. So wear your Costa Del Mar polarized sunglasses anytime the sun is shining. Costa Del Mar sunglasses have also increased my fishing as they allow me to see underwater vegetation, stumps, baitfish etc. Having the ability to see targets under the water that other anglers pass up is the key.

Guided trips on Lake Fork are a sure way to have a fun filled relaxing day. Our 2010 dates are filling quickly and for that we are blessed. Let me be the first guide you call for your fishing trip, as I can guarantee that I will try my hardest to #1 put you on fish, #2 have a great time doing it.

I hope these tips help you catch the bass of your dreams. Please know that I am always here to try and answer any questions you might have. Myself and several other Guides are available for public speaking, such as bass club meetings, boy scout meetings etc. at no cost to you. We can go over any topics related to Lake Fork or Bass Fishing, Boating etc.

Please practice C.P.R. (Catch, Photo, and Release). It takes many years for these fish to grow to their trophy size. By practicing a quick release, it allows other anglers to enjoy the same experience as you. Replica mounts can be made for your wall that look better and last longer than a real mount. Remember life jackets and kill switches any time the outboard motor is running or anytime you feel it would just be safer to wear it. Your safety is #1!

Fishing Report
June 2010
Spring time is coming to a close and the hot days of summer are closing in quickly.  This is one of my favorite times of year to be on Lake Fork. June will start great off shore structure fishing and night fishing for smart Lake Fork Bass.

Most anglers come to Lake Fork in search for bass over ten pounds.  Therefore, my style of fishing and my reports will hopefully help you build a pattern to do just that.

In June, the large fish have completed their spawn and are in search for food to replenish energy burned during this process.  Most of these big fish will be found in deeper water.  I consider deeper water, 10 – 30 foot.  This will be the depth range to fish day and night.  They will be foraging on crawfish, bream, shad, barfish and crappie.  So this gives an angler a variety of lure choices when going off shore.   Before heading out on the water, try a little map study.  Find and circle main lake points, humps, ledges and fast tapering banks.  Once on the water go to these places and locate the ones that have grass very close by.  Grass is a key ingredient in the whole process.  I like to fish deep water with hydrilla and/or milfoil very close by.  Add some timber, laydowns or brush piles to the mix and you will have a perfect spot.

I will be using a Custom Angle Moby Bass Rod 7 – 7’6 heavy action rod most of the time in June.  My reels are spooled with 20 lb. fluorocarbon or 30-50 lb. Power Pro braided line.  My theory is why get hooked up with a fish of a lifetime, without the gear to get it in the boat.  My first two lure choices for June are a Texas Rig with 5/0 hook and a Santone jig.  On the Texas Rig, try a Grande Bass Diamond Back Rattlesnake or a 12 inch Gene Larew El Salto worm.  Rig a Grande Bass Mutant or Mega Craw on the back of the jig.  I like to use a Jig in blk./blue and purple, watermelon red or green pumpkin.  A Carolina Rig with a four foot leader will catch a fair share of big fish for you in June as well.  Use a strong 3/0 or 4/0 hook with a Grande Bass Rattlesnake or Mutant. Try out a Custom Angle Rod called the Carolina Special. This rod provides sensitivity and back bone needed for this presentation.  It is also a great tool for throwing deep diving crankbaits like a DD-22. You will have to experiment with soft plastic colors as it can change daily. As a general rule, throw the Carolina rig in open water and a Texas rig in heavy cover.

I do want to say that Lake Fork has a shallow water bite year around.  Many days shallow water 1-10 foot; can provide an angler with more bites than deep water.   These fish can be caught on wacky wormed Grande Bass Rattlesnake, topwater poppers, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits and other shallow water lures.   I just know where the majority of my big fish come from and it is deeper water.

Night fishing on Lake Fork is very popular.  I have a theory that many large Lake Fork fish only feed at night, nocturnal.  Fish the same pattern at night as you would during the day.  The only difference is that I like to fish a little closer to the edge of the grass.

Fishing Report
April 2010

My next open dates are May 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30. But call anytime just to make sure.

Hello from Lake Fork. April is the most popular month to fish here at Lake Fork. The reason the lake draws so many anglers this month is due to the spawn. This month and much of May, the bass will be crowding shallow water to lay eggs etc. This makes these giant bass gather up and usually make them easier to catch.

I love to fish deep water throughout the year, but March and April I will be fishing shallow. To me shallow is 10 foot or less, this is where most of the bass in Lake Fork will be this month. Many anglers fish up in one or two foot this time of year. What they don’t realize is that the really big fish are under their boat in 5 – 10 foot. These big fish did not grow up in one of the nations most pressured lakes by living in one or two foot of water. They got big by learning how to hide out, just out of sight.  I’m going to explain a little and give a few tips that will hopefully put you on one of the cold water trophies.

When I am fishing Lake Fork in April, I look for a few key characteristics of an area before fishing it. The number one thing I look for is shallow water, close to deep water.   Second, Grass (milfoil or hydrilla). Third, a hard sandy bottom. These three ingredients will usually equal quality bites. In these areas I like to throw an array of different baits. For covering water quickly, we throw a Santone Chatterbait on a 7’ Custom Angle Rod heavy action, with 20 pound fluorocarbon on a high speed reel. When we slow down, we like to throw a Texas rigged Gene Larew Biggle Bug or a Grande Bass Mutant, rigged on a 7’ Custom Angle Rod heavy action and 50 lb braided line. When the bite seems tough or the water is clear, rig up a shakey head. My two favorite shakey head baits are a Gene Larew 4” salt craw or a Grande Bass Rattlesnake. These two baits will flat out catch fish year around. I like to fish the shakey head on Custom Angle Rod with 12 fluorocarbon line. Remember that these big fish use the creek channels and ditches as highways, to and from deep water. Find these areas and this will be where they should be. I like to start at the back of a creek and fish my way out. In April, I like a creek that is 10 foot deep with 3 or 4 foot on the sides. This is a really good spot.

A popular fishing method for April is bed fishing. Without a doubt it is very effective. Using Costa Del Mar sunglasses, anglers are able to see the fish laying eggs in shallow water. Many times these fish can be relatively easy to catch. Here I like to use a Santone finesse jig with a Gene Larew finesse craw behind it. The Santone jig company uses Gamakatsu hooks, which are very sharp. The sharp hook is very important. I have yet to find a bass spawning that does not go nuts over that set up, although you will have to play around with colors of the craw to find one she cannot stand.
